MUKUZANI: AN EXCEPTIONAL TERROIR

The Mukuzani microzone covers a surface of approximately 246 hectares on the right bank of the Alazani river gorge. It benefits from a moderate continental climate defined by atmospheric processes developed in subtropical and moderate latitudes. Cold air masses flowing down from Caucasus high top glaciers play a key role in forming a moderately humid climate, with hot summer and mild winter. Viticulture and winemaking exist in Mukuzani micro-zone from ancient times.

Mukuzani is the most famous Georgian PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). It designates an intense and structured red wine, produced from Saperavi grape variety.

Tilisma Winery exploits seven hectares of vineyards in the Mukuzani microzone.

OUR GRAPE VARIETIES

In order to produce diversified and well-balanced single or multi-varietal wines, we combine 9 different Georgian indigenous grape varieties.

- Rkatsiteli: White grape variety giving acidic and well-balanced white and amber wines with a good body, crisp green apple flavors and hints of quince and white peach.

- Saperavi: Red grape variety whose name means “the place of color”. It is one of the few teinturier grape varieties in the world, a grape with both red flesh and red skin. The wines made from saperavi show a deep, inky and often fully opaque color. It has flavors of dark berries, licorice, grilled meat, tobacco, chocolate and spices.

- Kakhuri Mtsvane: White grape variety that owes its name to the color of the matured grapes (mtsvane in Georgian means “green”). It gives light-bodied white wines full of character with distinctive aromas.

- Kisi: White grape variety used for both European and traditional qvevri wines. Aromas of ripe pear, marigold, tobacco and walnut characterize the wines made in qvevri with these grapes.

- Khikhvi: White grape variety that produces classical European wines wih aromas of exotic plants like box tree or qvevri wines with notes of ripe fruit and dried yellow fruit. Due to its capacity to accumulate sugar, it is also used for dessert wines.

- Tavkveri: Red grape variety that can be made into sparkling, rosé, red and even sweet wines. The red wines, either made with modern or traditional vinification methods, are medium bodied with notes of cherry, earth and herbs.

- Kakhuri Mtsvivani: Very rare white grape variety that gives fruity wines with aromas of peach, apricot and mandarin.

- Rkatsiteli Rosé or Vardisperi: vardisperi means « pink » in Georgian. The difference with Rkatsiteli is not only in the color but also in the richer aromas, depth and taste.

- Saperavi Budeshuri: Red grape variety. A close cousin of the saperavi variety with smaller grapes and a slightly different taste. It is characterized by ripe red fruit flavors and supple tannins.
